Leon Thomas 2025: A Funky, Soulful Night of R&B
Leon Thomas 2025 - Mutts Don’t Heel at Van Buren - Phoenix, AZ on December 21, 2025
There’s something about arriving early to a concert that feels like a quiet promise to yourself.
An hour before the doors opened, the room was already humming with soft R&B music playing through the speakers. Songs by Kehlani, Summer Walker, Usher, and Chris Brown created a calming atmosphere, the kind of music that gently settles into your chest rather than demanding your focus.
By the time the night truly started, the venue was full, packed tightly together. The air was heavy with anticipation.
Being there with my best friend made the night feel special, as if a memory was already being created before it even occurred.
Ambré: Mellow, Smooth, and Captivating
Ambré performing as an opener at Leon Thomas 2025 - Mutts Don’t Heel.
Before Leon ever stepped on stage, the night softened in the best way.
Ambré started with a mellow, smooth R&B vibe that instantly set the atmosphere. Her voice was soft yet steady, the music not hurrying but beckoning you to relax. Dressed in a large furry hat and oversized clothes, she exuded an effortless cool, her presence tranquil yet captivating.
Her songs seemed deliberately crafted, with melodies that came smoothly and lyrics that rewarded attentive listening. I was utterly immersed, letting the music envelop me and feeling it resonate through my body rather than simply hearing it.
Although most of her songs were unfamiliar to us, my best friend and I still danced and swayed along. That’s the charm of smooth R&B. You don’t need prior knowledge of the songs, just an open mind and a willingness to listen. By the end, I had become a new fan, eager to explore more of her music.
Leon Thomas: Funky, Soulful, and Fully Intentional

Then Leon Thomas stepped onto the stage, and the atmosphere changed.
His sound was funkier, richer, and layered with soul. Each move appeared deliberate, and every transition seemed purposeful. Watching him perform live felt particularly impactful, especially knowing many of us first saw him as a young talent on 'Victorious.' Even then, it was evident that music was deeply part of him.
Seeing him now, confident, grounded, and fully immersed in his artistry, was inspiring. He transitioned smoothly among instruments, playing drums, bass, and electric guitar as if they were natural extensions of himself. His voice conveyed depth and mastery, reflecting years of experience and dedication.
At one point, he said, “I ain’t done yet.”
And it felt like a promise.
The set moved seamlessly through funky grooves, soulful storytelling, and genuine moments of connection. Tracks such as “Love Jones,” “Breaking Point,” “MUTT,” and “Safe Place” were more than just performed; they were delivered with care, purpose, and heartfelt emotion.
The Venue Reality (And the Lesson It Brought)
That said, this night wasn’t perfect, and I want to acknowledge that honestly.
My best friend and I selected the upstairs balcony experience, paying extra for what we thought would be a more comfortable, elevated view. It was a spot to stand, watch, and grab food and drinks without the bustling crowd below.
But the reality didn’t quite match the promise.
We were placed behind seated guests, frequently moving around staff serving food and drinks. It seemed we were unintentionally in the way, both the workers doing their tasks and the guests trying to enjoy their seats. The distraction pulled me out of the experience more than I anticipated.
I was somewhat disappointed, not due to the artist but because of the venue setup and how the event was marketed. In a time when prices seem high everywhere, these details matter.
Nevertheless, I deliberately decided to let go of my frustration. I recalled my purpose for being there. I opted for mindfulness over irritation, and with that choice, the evening grew calmer once more.

Ending 2025 With Music & Meaning
Despite the hiccups, I’m grateful.
I’m grateful for the music that made me feel something.
For discovering Ambré in real time.
For witnessing Leon Thomas as the multifaceted artist he continues to become.
And most of all, for sharing this night with my best friend, dancing, vibing, and closing out 2025 with a memory that still lingers.
If anything, the night reminded me to be more deliberate with my experiences, mindful of how I spend my money, and to choose joy even when things aren’t ideal.
Cheers to that.
To music that keeps us present.
To nights that remind us why we love R&B.
And to end the year feeling full.
Always dreaming,
Deja.
